Shopping in Equador

Christmastime At A New Shopping Mall In Ecuador

On my Home Page, I wrote, "And don't worry- this is not the Third World. We have beautiful, modern, new shopping malls." I guess the picture proves the point.

As beautiful and inclusive of great shops as any mall you might wish for, this one, The Mall at San Luis, is barely two years old. It is in the Los Chillos Valley, about a half hour drive from the center of Quito. With its soaring, vaulted ceiling, large chapel-like towers and clocks, palm trees, shops, restaurants and movies, it is a great place to shop, eat and enjoy. And like many of the newer malls in the US, there is a supermarket in the mall, SuperMaxi, a huge grocery store carrying all the products you are used to in the States, plus fresh fruits and vegetables beyond what you would find at home.

As the quality of life grows in Ecuador, so does the concept of the Shopping Mall. All the larger cities in my country possess shiny, new malls such as this one. Not only do we have malls, we also now have credit cards in Ecuador. The way items are marked for sale makes you think you have died and gone to Heaven

But I must warn you about the prices: While not rock bottom, prices are, in many instances, substantially less than you would expect to pay. But the price you see for something in a shop in one of the new malls is not usually the total price- generally it is the monthly credit card payment. So you will see a new exercise bike, for example, and it is marked $39.00. That is not how much it costs to buy the bicycle; it is the amount of the monthly payment!

You will be surprised by the number of shops, the quality and variety of the goods for sale,, and the great numbers of people who are crowding the stores. You will very rapidly realize you are, most certainly, not in the Third World.

There are a good number of quality Native Ecuadorian markets, described elsewhere on this site. There are also many shopping centers found in the areas surrounding Quito, such as the Mall at San Luis, pictured above, and the Ventura Mall in nearby Tumbaco. All of them are within an easy drive from my home, Casa Isabella, and I have many clients who ask me to arrange a day of only shopping, as there are much more attractive prices in Ecuador than in the US or Europe. You will love shopping here!

Shopping Malls in Quito (By Neighborhood)

Mall El Jardin

You will feel like you never left home when you are walking around this mall, one of the newest in Quito. The food court on the third floor has many familiar American fast food chains and there is a sit-down café on the ground floor. The mall shops sell footwear and clothing, sporting goods, stereo equipment, books, stationery and antiques. There is a drug store and a supermarket as well.  (New Town)

Centro Comercial Iñaquito

This large mall includes a Supermaxi supermarket that rivals anything you will find in the States. Also, there is a drug store, toy store, antique shop and clothing stores selling familiar brands like Diesel, Nine West and Liz Claiborne. The mall contains and ice skating rink and arcade, which makes it much more family-friendly than many of its competitors. There is a food court with American fast food and several Ecuadorian chains. (New Town)

Centro Comercial El Caracol

This was one of Quito's first modern shopping malls, and it remains popular because of its diverse selection of stores and a family-friendly ambiance. There are 100 stores offering everything from perfume and jewelry to shoes and clothes. There is a penthouse restaurant and a playground area for the kids where you can often catch a puppet show or other entertainment- similar to American Malls. (New Town)

Mercado Artesanal La Mariscal

This market, located in New Town in the heart of the Mariscal area, is the perfect place to pick up an authentic Ecuadorian souvenir. Permanent stalls sell hand-woven textiles, delicate silver jewelry, carved wooden toys, decorative and household items and even flutes used by the natives. Credit card acceptance varies by vendor so be sure to have some cash on hand. (Mariscal)

Mercado de Santa Clara

This is a genuine farmer's market, and is a wonderful place to get a taste – literally – of how Quito's residents live. You will find colorful vegetables, herbs and fresh flowers attractively displayed. On the second floor there is a meat and fish market, and there are a few vendors selling handcrafted items such as baskets perfect for carrying home tourist mementos. (New Town)

Mercado Ipiales

If you check at some of the larger, more expensive hotels, they will sometimes turn their noses up at this place. It is a huge flea market, where you will find everything from clothing and electronic gadgets to food and heavy industrial machinery. The locals view this shopping region as an excellent, low-cost alternative to the more expensive modern malls. Prices are often half of regular retail, and the best deals are usually on shoes and clothing. (Old Town)

Parque El Ejido Arts & Crafts Market

Open only on weekends, This market is in Parque El Ejido near the arch. Vendors sell everything from handmade clothes to jewelry and carved wooden sculptures, but the main attraction here is the paintings. If you would like a piece of art to remember your trip to Quito, then this market is a must-see. Artists sell depictions of scenes from around the city, including paintings of Quito's numerous historic buildings and streets. Be forewarned: Cash only. And also be advised not to carry large bills. Hundred dollar bills are difficult and costly for small merchants and independent businessmen. (Mariscal)

Quicentro Shopping

A pleasant shopping experience awaits you here . Stores are spread over three stories. A large fruit market and an arcade are located on the third floor. The food court – complete with McDonalds and Burger King – are on the second floor, along with a salon and clothing and jewelry stores. The first floor includes more clothing stores, a stationery shop, a bakery and several antique shops. (New Town)
