On my Home Page, I wrote, "And don't worry- this is not the Third World. We have beautiful, modern, new shopping malls." I guess the picture proves the point.
As beautiful and inclusive of great shops as any mall you might wish for, this one, The Mall at San Luis, is barely two years old. It is in the Los Chillos Valley, about a half hour drive from the center of Quito. With its soaring, vaulted ceiling, large chapel-like towers and clocks, palm trees, shops, restaurants and movies, it is a great place to shop, eat and enjoy. And like
many of the newer malls in the US, there is a supermarket in the mall, SuperMaxi, a huge grocery store carrying all the products you are used to in the States, plus fresh fruits and vegetables beyond what you would find at home.
As the quality of life grows in Ecuador, so does the concept of the Shopping Mall. All the larger cities in my country possess shiny, new malls such as this one. Not only do we have malls, we also now have credit cards in Ecuador. The way items are marked for sale makes you think you have died and gone to Heaven
But I must warn you about the prices: While not rock bottom, prices are, in many instances, substantially less than you would expect to pay. But the price you see for something in a shop in one of the new malls is
not usually the total price- generally it is the monthly credit card payment. So you will see a new exercise bike, for example, and it is marked $39.00. That is not how much it costs to buy the bicycle; it is the amount of the monthly payment!
You will be surprised by the number of shops, the quality and variety of the goods for sale,, and the great numbers of people who are crowding the stores. You will very rapidly realize you are, most certainly, not in the Third World.
There are a good number of quality Native Ecuadorian markets, described elsewhere on this site. There are also many shopping centers found in the areas surrounding Quito, such as the Mall at San Luis, pictured above, and the Ventura Mall in nearby Tumbaco. All of them are within an easy drive from my home, Casa
Isabella, and I have many clients who ask me to arrange a day of only shopping, as there are much more attractive prices in Ecuador than in the US or Europe. You will love shopping here!
